On Sunday 25th November, on behalf of Coventry Bloggers, I had the pleasure to visit the newly opened The Botanist Coventry. This press day was not only made special because of the attraction of the aesthetics that the Botanist hosts but the opportunity to view the space prior to the official launch, and paired with live acoustic music being played made the space even more vibrant and unique. This is why Coventry needed The Botanist.
In the run up to the major 2021 event, that officially crowns Coventry as the city of culture, it is important we continue to celebrate local talent within the West Midlands. Having a space that is unique and attractive to this major student based city will help bring together the community whilst showcasing live music in a contemporary setting. The ultimate aim of being a City of Culture is to encourage the celebration of creativity, innovation and diversity within the UK, which is why as a city that embraces its diverse multi-cultural population, Coventry has been awarded the title. The location of The Botanist is placed within the heart of the city centre, overseeing the Lady Godiva statue which makes it even that bit more unique to Coventry, (plus a perfect photo opportunity!).
The Botanist is located on the first level of the complex within the city centre which already provides with audience with anticipation whilst they head up the stairway (or lift that is available) to entrance. The balcony allows views of the city, and at night, especially during the Christmas period, boasts the colourful lights and festive stalls below within the square.
The atmosphere within The Botanist as you walk in makes you almost feel as though you’ve left the outside world behind when you are inside this dreamy setting filled with warm copper interior, contrasted with the green foliage setting. As you walk over the bridge you then notice the little stream running around the edges of the venue, giving a calm feel to the overall heavily designed interior.
During this press launch, we had the pleasure to taste the menu, including the very special Sunday roast, which can be cooked to your preference, and with the added sides including, creamed garlic kale and leek; buttered carrot and parsnip mash and baked courgette safe and apricot stuffing balls, it is a Sunday lunch you’re not going to forget! (The delicate flavour of the roast lamb was a particular favourite and would highly recommend!)
The rich taste of the menu is only complimented by the live music that The Botanist provides 7 nights a week, which is a unique experience for the people of Coventry to enjoy with their loved ones. This element is arranged by the musical agents Genre Music who carefully select artists to showcase their talent. Whilst this atmosphere still provides a “social media” attraction, by the customers “Snapchatting" or “Instagramming" the artists performing and the interior of The Botanist, it also gives the opportunity for the appreciation of live music again, whilst savouring a local gin or the extensive range of botanical-infused cocktails.
The menu is sure to pull in major clientele from outside of the Coventry and Warwickshire areas, as famous for its student-city life experience, Coventry has been missing a venue that can cater for a range of both the work social and high profile events or celebrations.
Artist Steven Edwards has played at The Botanist already a few times since its public opening on the 26th November and then official opening by the Major of Coventry on the 15th December. I had the chance to catchup with Steven and ask more about how this venue has impacted on the city from not only an artists’ perspective but someone who is local to Coventry -
"The Botanist is such a modern space to perform live music, not only are the natural acoustic wonderful but the welcoming vibe of it makes it one of my favourite places to play. I love seeing people singing along to the songs I’m playing and if I can help them have a good time whilst enjoying their awesome food and drinks then that’s all part of my job."
Coventry is proud to host a history of high profile musical moguls such as The Specials, The Enemy and the newly up and coming boy-band Candid. By having the space to appreciate the new talent the West Midlands brings to the City of Culture, it will be clear by 2021 why the city has claimed the title. Steven Edwards continues to add -
“Live music is so important in today’s world and sometimes people don’t get access to it as often as they would like. I’d encourage anyone to head along to The Botanist and listen to the brilliant musicians performing seven nights a week."
So things are only looking positive for Britain’s ‘Motor City’ - bursting with more live events, music, arts, theatre than ever before, and now with hosting The Botanist in the heart of the city, you can be sure that there is something for everyone to get involved in and enjoy!
